8 CAUSES OF ED (ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION)

 ED (Erectile Dysfunction) occurs when you are not able to get an erection, maintain an erection or ejaculate uncontrollably. It is sometimes referred to as Impotence. Generally, People aged over 40 experience this, and it gets worse with age. But due to a sedentary lifestyle, younger people are also facing this problem. It’s even higher in men having cardiovascular diseases. ED can affect your sex life negatively and can cause depression, stress, and low self-esteem. 

 

Let’s have a look at some of the factors responsible for it.

 ED Causes

There are many possible causes for ED, and they can include both psychological and physiological disorders. Some common causes are :

 

  1. Depression

One of the major causes of ED is depression. In today’s era, 90% of people are suffering from diseases that occur due to stress. Stress is the prime factor. Sexual thoughts take place in your head then it goes down to your penis. Depression dampens your desire, and it may lead to ED. Apart from that, drugs that you use to treat depression can also weaken your sex drive and resulting in a not-so-harder erection. It can also lead to either premature ejaculation or delayed ejaculation.

 

  1. Alcohol

You may consider having a couple of drinks to feel relaxed. But overindulgence could probably turn out to be very unhealthy and may lead to erectile dysfunction. Drinking in moderation, however, can be considered as a good thing as it reduces stress and may positively affect ED.

 

  1. Obesity

Being obese is not at all fruitful in terms of sexual intimacy. These extra pounds can hamper your sexual performance. Generally, obese people have low levels of testosterone, which is responsible for an erection. Being overweight may also cause high blood pressure and blocked arteries, which reduce the blood flow to the penis and lead to erectile dysfunction.

 

  1. Medications

If you are undergoing medications, whether these are blood pressure drugs, pain medications, or anti-depressants, it can be very harmful in terms of sexual performance. It may lead to erectile dysfunctions as well. Certain drugs like cocaine and marijuana can ruin your sexual drive.

 

  1. Health issues 

Many different health issues can also be the factors for ED as they affect nerves, muscles, and blood flow, which are responsible for a proper erection. Diabetes, high blood pressure, blocked arteries, spinal cord injuries can affect the erection severely. Any surgery for prostate or bladder can also affect the nerves and blood vessels, which helps in erection.

 

  1. Sleep disorders 

Sleep disorders such as insomnia may lead to a lack of sexual desire. If you don’t complete your sleep hours, then you feel sluggish, exhausted, and it kills the sexual excitement in you. As a result, you don’t get a proper erection.

 

  1. Thyroid 

An imbalance in your hormones such as testosterone, the thyroid can also cause erectile dysfunction. Certain hormonal conditions like hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), and hypogonadism (lower testosterone levels) are responsible for weak erection.

 

  1. Injuries

Specific injuries like pelvic fracture can cause injuries to the nerve and blood vessels responsible for a healthy erection. Penile fracture can damage the blood vessels and lead to erectile dysfunction. It is said that riding a bicycle for a long time can also lead to mild injury to the nerves in certain areas, which can lead to erectile dysfunction.
