What is Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is also known as hair implants or hair restoration. As the name suggests hair follicles are transplanted from back of the head to the bald region of the head. Hair of the back of the head is not prone to hair fall or hair loss. Even when they are moved to the other position of the head (frontal or crown area of the head), they continue to sustain and grow as it is. Hair follicle usually grows in a group of 1 – 4. Either individual hair or groups of hair follicles are grafted vertically or laterally to restore the natural hairline. Hair transplant started in the late 1950s in US and Japan. Since then, many new technologies and advancement in hair grafting have been introduced. Though hair transplant is the best possible solution to baldness and hair loss, still outcome depends on individuals. Many times, patients plan for consecutive hair transplantation to get the fuller crown.
Hair transplant for men & women
Hair transplant is more likely to perform on men. Men have consistent healthy & thick hair growth at the back of the head which acts as perfect donor area. However, women usually have diffused hair loss or hair thinning across the back and frontal head. It may hamper the quality of donor's hair that you collect. But if there is no diffused hair loss or hair thinning, then bald/scanty areas can easily be covered with a hair transplant.
How does hair Transplant work? – Hair transplant procedure & postoperative care
The place where hair follicles are extracted is called donor’s site and receiving area is called recipient site. To start off, the doctor will examine the patient to look for quality donor’s site. Most often back of the head is considered for the hair extraction, however, if there are fewer quality follicles at the back of the head, other areas of the body can also be considered for donor’s site like torso, chest hair, pubic hair or legs. There are a couple of methods for harvesting follicle from donor’s site. One is called FUT (Follicle unit Transplant) and the other is called FUE (Follicle unit extraction).
As the name suggests, FUE method includes extraction of hair follicles, one by one from the donor’s site and grafting real time on recipient site. The process is time-consuming and can take up to 4 to 8 hours. The process is minimally invasive however requires a lot of skill and experience at doctor’s end. Each hair should be grafted in the direction to match the natural hairline and direction of growth. The result is real-like with hardly any visible scars of hair extraction.
In FUT method, a rectangular strip of size 1–1.5 x 15–30 cm is excised from the back of the head or preferred donor’s site with the use of a scalpel. The strip of skin is then treated under a microscope to harvest 500 to 2000 hair grafts for hair transplantation. Donor’s site is then sewed back. But it leaves a scar which gets covered even by a small length of existing natural hair. This process is slightly cheaper than FUE treatment and requires only 1 sitting. However, the recovery time can be 2 weeks or more in comparison to under 7 days recovery time for FUE treatments.
Post operation, the patient is advised to avoid direct sun rays on the treated area. No shower or shampooing at least 2 days after the surgery. In cases, doctors themselves washed the head after a day to avoid drying on swab or blood. Antibiotics or painkiller could be given to reduce infection and pain. One may feel swollen head or tender head skin. It may take a week to 10 days to get back to normal. One can start office after 2 – 5 days with some covering on the head and proper medication.
What is ‘Shock Loss’ after Hair Transplant Surgery?
Don’t get shocked when you get a shock loss of hair. This basically means that because of unnatural movement of the hair follicle, new moved hair gets traumatized and eventually falls out within 7 to 10 days of surgery. However, in a month or 2 months’ time, a new & permanent growth of hair comes. These new hairs grow thicker and fuller in length as follicle resumes new positions as natural habitat.
What is the Cost of hair transplant in Bangalore?
Hair transplant cost has become very much standard now a day. It costs from Rs.30 per hair graft to Rs.100. For level 2 FUE treatment, the cost will start from 35,000 and increase as per one's baldness. Timely discounts and early bird offers can make the deal sweeter for the patient. Regular insurance does not cover this treatment but EMI facility can be availed. One can also go for hair transplant on eyebrow, upper lips, beard or other body areas as per need. While the cost of treatment is an important factor but a skilled doctor plays a bigger role in servicing real like the outcome.
