Anemia is a condition marked by the decreased concentration of the red blood corpuscles (the RBCs) in the blood. Blood is the most important fluid of the body is concerned with supplying the requisite oxygen to the tissues. It also carries the nutrients to the tissues. This oxygen is transported by the RBCs and in case these getting reduced, the oxygen-carrying capacity is also reduced. This further develops conditions like fatigue and different types of nutritional deficiencies. Anemia has become a common condition and there is a large section of the population that suffers from anemia. Women and children, in particular, are at greater chances of developing it.


The causes of anemia


Anemia could also be genetic and may pass from generation to generation (in the case of sickle cell anemia). Additionally, the loss of blood due to any reason is also responsible for the development of anemia. Different types of gastrointestinal problems like ulcers, hemorrhoids, and gastritis eat up the blood in the body. This transforms into anemia.


Cancer conditions also eat up the blood in high volume and this also translates into the blood deficiency. In most cases, cancer patients are offered iron supplements and even blood infusions.


Childbirth also causes blood loss and allied anemia. The women suffering from excessive blood loss during menstruation is also caused of anemia.


The symptoms of anemia –


As blood is the most fundamental carrier in the body. In case of depletion of its main ingredient which is iron, diversity of symptoms are seen in the individual. The main symptoms include the following. 

  • General fatigue and weakness – anemia generate an inherent weakness and the body feels the fatigue all the time.
  • Dizziness – dizziness may be experienced by the anemic persons.
  • Shortness of breath – shortness of breath is caused because the blood is unable to meet the oxygen demand.
  • Swelling and soreness in the tongue – people may experience soreness and swelling in their tongue.
  • Crawling feeling in legs – lack of proper amount of blood flow causes crawling in the legs.
  • Pallor – severe anemia results in pale skin color.
  • Strange cravings to eat things - like ice, clay or such.


How can Ayurveda help out the anemic person?


Ayurveda can be helpful to counter the anemic conditions by making the internal rejuvenations and setting in the good processes. The absorption of iron into the blood is an essential parameter that determines the level of iron or conversely its deficiency for the person. Ayurveda tries to attempt the pachak dosha under the pitt vikar and thus correct the imbalances in the body. When the imbalances are corrected, the body retains its optimum levels of iron.


The Ayurvedic treatment of anemia is possible with following herbs –


Ash gourd – ash gourd checks the loss of blood in the condition of piles.

Celery – this is rich in iron and magnesium and hence supports the production of more and healthy RBCs

Chicory – when combined with celery and parsley, it gives fine results for the anemic persons.

Fenugreek – it makes up the volume of blood and is helpful for girls experiencing iron deficiency during puberty

Onion – onion has a good content of iron and is more effective a source because this iron is easily assimilated during digestion.

Beetroot and fruits like apples are also helpful in eliminating the iron deficiency.
