What is Acidity:

Acidity or heartburn simply indicates increased level of acids in the stomach. Our stomach secrets Hydrochloric Acid, which is responsible for breaking down the food particles to the smallest forms in order to facilitate digestion. The secretion is initiated by the food intake. Due to some abnormality or other, sometimes there is more secretion of gastric acid (Hydrochloric Acid), which travels up through the esophagus and offers a heartburn and sour mouth like sensation. This is known as hyperacidity or simply acidity in humans. 

Causes of Acidity:

The main cause of Acidity is aggression of Pitta Dosha – which symbolizes power of fire in Ayurveda. There are many causes, which can stimulate Acidity in human. Some of the most prominent causes that trigger acidity are:

  1. Oily and spicy food
  2. Food with strong sour flavor
  3. Pungent foods
  4. Sugary substances and white flour
  5. Improper mixing of food items (i.e. milk+fish, etc.)
  6. Carbonated drinks
  7. Processed and fried foods
  8. Tea, Coffee, Alcohol
  9. Meat and Dairy products
  10. Stale food items
  11. Sweets
  12. Smoking, Stress, Anxiety, Hypertension
  13. Some drugs like Aspirin, and many over the counter drugs

Symptoms of Acidity:

Acidity symptoms are immediately visible to a person with sudden sour throat and heartburn. There are other symptoms, which can arise out of acidity and they are:

  1. Burning sensation in heart and throat region
  2. Vomiting
  3. Pain in stomach
  4. Cramps in stomach and tightening of stomach
  5. Loss of appetite
  6. Burping
  7. Nausea
  8. Headache
  9. Dry throat
  10. Bitter taste in mouth
  11. Dyspepsia

How can Ayurveda help in Acidity:

Ayurveda is considered as one of the most effective treatment of acidity – also commonly known as ‘Urdhvag Amalpitta’ in Ayurvedic terms. There are several Ayurvedic home remedies available for treatment of acidity, which we usually practice in such discomfort. As acidity can lead to indigestion and can aggravate to extreme cases of intestinal ulcers, peptic ulcers, gouts and IBS, it is essential to take help of hundreds of herbs available in nature to treat this condition and get rid of it as early as possible.

Acidity and Amla can be neutralized with Basic (Khara) substances and any herb with such a property can be used as an acidity regulator.

Herbs in Ayurveda for treatment of Acidity:

  • Tulasi: This supreme herb is also treated as a sacred plant. Taking 4-5 Tulasi leaves can regulate gas formation and acidity.
  • Turmeric: This is a natural ingredient which can prevent harm to stomach as a result of acidity
  • Fresh Garlic: This is quite effective in regulation of acid formation inside stomach
  • Gur (Jaggery): Is considered to be one of the best for rejuvenation and protection from acidity
  • Indian Gooseberry: Shows calming effect and subsidizes the inflammation
  • Onion with Curd and Sugar: Has a super effect on the formation of gas and acid in the stomach
  • Cloves: Can help in subsidizing heartburns
  • Pomegranate Juice: Reduces acid formation and soothes heartburns
