The Ishabgol husk contains high fibre content part of which is soluble and has a gentle laxative action. The flour of Ishabgol husk is added in multigrain flour to enhance nutritive value as well as fibre content of cereal flours. This husk can absorb 14 times more water than its weight while its seeds take in 3 times water. Ishabgol relieves abdominal pain, induce urination and treats constipation. Its biological name is Plantago Ispagula but is also commonly referred to as ispaghula, spogel seeds and is indigenous to Iran and India. Although the drug was conventionally prescribed for constipation, it was also a valuable topical remedy for skin conditions like insect stings and poison ivy reaction. Indian and Chinese conventional herbalists applied it for curing high blood pressure, bladder problems, haemorrhoids and diarrhoea.
